It's got to be easier to recreate the JDM Civic R than it is the not-sold-in-America UK-spec Civic R hatch. so that we can build our own "USDM" Type R wanna-bes. Those of us living in America should start sourcing Type R front clips, tail lights, etc. The JDM Civic Type R just went on sale in Japan, so those of you lucky enough to live in Nippon should run out and buy one right now. Factory-designed aftermarket performance parts (including brake and suspension upgrades) are available as well. ETC (freeway toll) passes can be equipped straight from the factory, as can more common (to Americans) items like a satellite navigation system, "Bass Works" sound system and side racing stripes. Though the Civic Type R is designed as a hard-core performance sedan, one can equip it with a host of creature comforts. We'd opt for "all black", but that's just 'cause everyone we know with Type R-red Recaros have had their cars stolen. Civic R buyers can opt for the black and red interior color scheme or the more subdued all-black interior. Rounding out the Type R package is a push-button starter, navigation screen delete and drilled aluminum pedals. The Civic Type R keeps the "love-it-or-hate-it" two-tiered dash we love it, so we're glad it's staying. "Honda R-spec" seats (which look an awful lot like the EK's Recaros) keep the front occupants in place while extra side bolsters on the rear bench keep back seat passengers from flying all over the place while running the C1 loop. The chassis has also been beefed up to the point where the Type R is 50-percent stiffer than the standard Civic sedan, yet the structural additives add only 1.8 kg to the car's overall weight.

The lower vents on the front fascia send cool air to the front brake system while the rear wing adds actual downforce (yes, front-drive cars need downforce, too.). There is only one transmission available for the Civic Type R: a six-speed manual with a standard LSD. In normal city driving, it would seem that one can get around town shifting at 3K or so (which we do in our own daily-driven Hondas), making the new R sedan a more civilized ride. The torque curve then quickly drops off and doesn't hit peak twist until over 6,000 rpm. Torque builds to a significant 210 Nm (154 lb.-ft.) at 3,000 rpm.
